How to Generate DTM Data for Accurate Earthwork Volume Calculation

DTM and DSM

When you analyze drone survey data on the Meissa platform, a 2D orthophoto and a 3D terrain model are generated. In the 2D orthophoto tab you can check the DSM (Digital Surface Model) data, and in the 3D tab you can check the current elevation.

To help you understand these terrain models: the DSM (Digital Surface Model) is a surface model that includes the height of every feature on the ground (buildings, vegetation, facilities, and so on), while the DTM (Digital Terrain Model) is a model that represents only the bare ground surface height, excluding such features. DEM (Digital Elevation Model) is the umbrella term for both and means a digital elevation model.

As explained in the previous post 'The Volume Calculation Process Using a Drone Platform', Meissa's volume calculation feature works by comparing the planned elevation with the current elevation. The current elevation used as the comparison baseline is precisely the DSM data.

For even more accurate volume calculation, it is best to edit the DSM data and convert it into DTM data. This is because, once you generate DTM data, you can calculate the earthwork volume of a construction site while excluding unnecessary objects such as temporarily stockpiled soil and heavy equipment, obtaining an accurate volume for the bare ground surface alone.

On the Meissa platform, you can easily generate DTM data from the created DSM model using the 'Add DTM' feature. Here is how to use the Add DTM feature:

When only the site analysis has been completed

  • (A) When you click the DEM (Digital Elevation Model) section, you can see that DSM data has been generated below.
  • (B) Press the Add DTM button above, then click the Create Directly button.
  • (C) Use the Select Area button to set the area you want to remove.
  • (D) Click the Create DTM button to complete the task.

When you already have a DTM created

  • (A) When you click the DEM (Digital Elevation Model) section, you can see the uploaded DTM (Digital Terrain Model) data.
  • (B) Click the Edit DTM button to enter the DTM creation page.
  • (C) Use Select Area to create a region that needs to be flattened, or
  • (D) click an existing region to edit it.
  • (E) Click the Create DTM button to complete the task.

How to Generate a DTM
